An eight-foot column of structural support, the fence post is an essential component of many fencing systems. These tall wooden posts can be crafted from a variety of materials ranging from wood, steel, aluminum, and concrete. Wood fence posts are often protected against rot and decay with a preservative coating, while metal or concrete alternatives provide a longer lasting solution.

Different heights of fence posts are available, ranging from 4 to 12 feet tall. Generally, these posts are set 8 feet apart, though wider gaps may be necessary for longer fencing. To install a fence appropriately, it is essential to create the corresponding post-holes. The depth of the holes depends on the height of the fence: a 2-foot hole is adequate for an 8-foot fence.

After the excavation is complete, those highly beneficial posts can finally be inserted. To ensure full protection from the elements and prevent rot, it is critical to prime the wood posts beforehand. Then, simply position them in their respective holes and lastly refill them with soil.

For a more secure installation, metal posts must be secured snugly in their respective holes. Begin by submerging the posts into the pre-dug holes and once all are set, pour concrete until the holes are full. As the concrete sets, your fence panels can be confidently secured upon the foundation it provides.

Stationing concrete fence posts is just as convenient as with metal posts, however requires no extra effort to set them securely in the ground. After all the posts are where they should be, the panels can finally be attached.
